What are your pet peeves when it comes to reading, what makes you instantly nope out of a book or a fanfic?

For me it's bad punctuation, bad grammar, bad spelling, bad formatting. I don't mean the occasional overlooked mistake, but when it is done consistently, I'm out of there. If you can't be bothered to put your fic together properly, I ain't putting in the effort to read it, because it will take effort.

Also things like "bare/bear" and "defiantly/definitely" (or definatly even). The other day I saw someone use "stationary" when they clearly meant "stationery", even when I had used the word in the message before them. Maybe they thought I had misspelled it? Their mistake, I guess.

What are yours?

Personally i would say bad plot and world building. When someone relies on obvious loopholes, makes very cliche things without a hint of originality. Like so many copy pasted mangas.

Unfortunately i cant read books as i lack the focus for it so i have to settle for mangas :'(

I can understand that especially when its a really poor translation/ rly bad grammar. I usually rely a bit on the autocorrect and google to help me out since i speed through and mix how some words are written as i view language in aproximate way more then in a precise rule way.

Bad spelling and grammar, massive paragraphs of doom (of which I am also guilty), misspelled character names in fanfic.

Edit to add: I hate the word snarky. It needs to die. And so does every MC described by this word in tags.

Stannis Baratheon, first of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Protector of the Realm and Lord of the Seven Kingdoms.
This is my name. Say it every time we speak.

Massive walls of text kill a story for me too, no matter how good it actually is. I don't care, I'm out. The rest in here I all agree with too.
Ask me nicely. 8-)

I hate the word "smirk".

I also despise when authors keep writing the same story over and over again. Try something new.

Unfortunately I am guilty of that too  I am not original at all. I have my moments of creativity, true, but I also like to rewrite the same thing over and over again. I think some of it stems from the fact that I am looking for a specific iteration of the idea and none of the previous ones hit the spot right, so I keep trying until I get it right. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.

I assume the idea is to keep improving some concept you want to perfect?

I think a lot of people have their "comfort" themes, stories, tropes.

It's like, idk, liking vanilla? It's your favorite flavor, you'll eat any dessert that has it.

For some people, they like vanilla so much they won't eat anything else. I suppose it's the same with writing. It doesn't always have to be about building up towards a "better" more perfect product.

I eat stracciatella (and vanila) only but everyone makes it differently and its never the same. So realistically even tho it might be similar to another work there always needs to be something special about it. One has their favourite ice cream shop after all, but it can only shine if you try other things that are close enough.

I cant understand that people dont strive to get a more perfect product.
