If you're playing with a good DM who doesn't force encounters, there's nothing as fun as a bard.
If the campaign is filled with political intrigue, I'll jump to play a bard any day.

I like any class that is a jack of all trades, Up until recently when i fully went to play my own TTRPG i used to play Paladin the most. Its a mage, a fighter, can be sup can dps. The onyl downside is that you have to pick a god but alas find someone and thats it.

I love political intrigue and most bards are fun to have around. I really like the option to use your abilities outside of combat as well (while someone like bard has specially designed abilities just for that)

Skill encounters > combat any day.

When I realized that DnD was primarily a war game was the moment I decided to branch out into other systems

Yea especially when you look at the full history of dnd, it evolved from a legit war game. Overtime it got fleshed out but they could never really leave that headspace. I love skill encounters and combat encounters (i also have share your opinon that skill>combat, but i think combat does play an imporant role in the game)
